It is snowing in Astoria. The roads are looking bad. Highway 30 is requiring chains. And my appointment is the next day in Portland. Randy has promised to drive me up there.
Tana is staying with her sister in Battleground and has offered us a place to stay if we can get there.
His parents don’t ask why but they loan Randy the pickup with the 4x4. We drive through the snow at 25 miles an hour. We don’t really talk. He is trying to be cautious on the road and I am too caught up in my own worries. It is one of the longest nights of my life.
We get to Battleground around 11pm. Tana puts Randy on the couch and she and I share a room and talk until around 3. She offers to come with me tomorrow. I tell her we can meet afterward if she wants to.
